Steps:
12.1 Step 1: 1-((methylsulfonyl)methyl)-3-nitrobenzene
The reaction flask was added 5.85 grams of 1-(bromomethyl)-3-nitrobenzene, 3.32 grams of sodium methylsulfonate, 100 milliliters of absolute ethanol, and the mixture was heated to reflux for 4 hours under argon atmosphere. Cooled to room temperature, concentrated, the residue column chromatography (ethyl acetate: petroleum ether = 30: 70) to give 1-((methylsulfonyl)methyl)-3-nitrobenzene as a white solid, weighed 4.95 g. Yield: 85%.
