MPEG6 alcohol (10.0 g, 33.7 mmol) was dissolved in 40 mL dry CH2Cl2 and the resulting solution was cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath. TEA (5.64 μL, 40.5 mmol) was added and then 3.13 mL (40.5 mmol) methanesulfonyl chloride was added drop wise. The reaction was stirred for thirty minutes at 0° C. and then removed from the ice bath, allowed to come to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with more CH2Cl2 and washed with saturated NaHCO3 and water. The organics were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 12.4 g (98%) of MPEG6 mesylate, I.
