A mixture of 2-bromo-1-(2-fluorophenyl)ethanone (5.0 g, 23.0 mmol), potassium thiocyanate (2.24 g, 23.0 mmol), and EtOH (50 mL) was stirred at 80 C for 2.0 h, diluted with water, and extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo to give 18 (4.29 g, 96%) as a colorless solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) d: 4.66 (2H, d, J = 3.0 Hz), 7.19-7.25 (1H, m), 7.29-7.35 (1H, m), 7.62-7.69 (1H, m), 7.96-8.02 (1H, m).
