Steps:

5.1.5. 1-Phenyl-2-thiocyanatoethanone (17)

General procedure: A mixture of 2-bromo-1-phenylethanone (10 g, 50.0 mmol), potassium thiocyanate (4.90 g, 50.0 mmol), and EtOH (80 mL) was stirred at 80 C for 3.0 h. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with water. The solid was collected by filtration and washed with 50% EtOH/water to give 17 (5.99 g, 68%) as a colorless powder.
