To 147 mg (0.720 mmol) of 5-methyl-2-(2-nitrophenyl)oxazole in 3 mL of isopropanol and 1 mL of water was added 198 mg (3.60 mmol) of iron pwder, and 46 mg (0.86 mmol) of ammonium chloride. The reaction was stirred at reflux for 1.5 h, then filtered. The solids were washed with ethyl acetate, then the combined filtrate and washings were concentrated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between 10 mL of ethyl acetate and 3 mL of water, and the layers were separated. The organic layer was extracted with brine (1 x 3 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give 1 16 mg (92%) of a solid.
