Synthesis of 1-(7-ethylbenzofuran-2-yl)ethanone 3
Chloroacetone (7.32 g, 79.2 mmol) was added dropwise to a mixture of 2 (10.8 g, 72 mmol) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (9.95 g, 72 mmol) in acetonitrile (60 mL) at 35 C. The mixture was refluxed for 5 h and cooled to rt. The precipitated solid was filtered off and washed with acetonitrile (2 10 mL). After removing the solvent the crude product was purified by distillation followed by recrystallization from n-hexane affording the pure desired product 3 (9.9 g, 73% yield). Spectral data were in accordance with those reported in the literature.
