2-Bromo-4-methylbenzyl chloride synthesis

5synthesis methods
-

Yield:147542-02-7 82.1%

Reaction Conditions:

with thionyl chloride at 0 - 20; for 1 h;

Steps:

107.2 Step 2: 2-Bromo-1-(chloromethyl)-4-methylbenzene

To a solution of (2-bromo-4-methyl-phenyl) methanol (1.54 g, 7.66 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 mL) was added thionyl chloride (9.10 g, 76.49 mmol) at 0 °C. The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h at room temperature. The reaction was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed with brine and sat. sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum to afford the title compound (1.38 g, 82.1% yield) as colorless oil.1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) d 7.55- 7.45 (m, 2H), 7.26- 7.18 (m, 1H), 4.78 (s, 2H), 2.31 (s, 3H).
