2-Chloro-5-nitro benzoic acid (2g, lOmmol) was added to 40% dimethylarnine aq. solution (20ml) at room temperature and then heated at 60-650C for 3hr. The reaction mixture was chilled to O0C and acidified with dilute acetic acid. The mixture was then extracted with ethyl acetate, and the organic layer washed with water, then brine and dried. Evaporation of the solvent yielded 2-dimethylamino-5-nitro-benzoic acid (2.1g, 91%), as a solid.
