with bromine in acetic acid at 0 - 20; for 6 h;

Steps:

2.1 (1) Synthesis of intermediate 5-methyl-2-isopropyl-4-bromophenol
1.218 g of thymol was dissolved in 20 mL of acetic acid, and the resulting solution was cooled to 0 °C.0.51 mL of Br2was slowly added over 20 minusing a constant pressure droppingfunnel, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for a further 6 h.The reactionshould be poured into 50mL of ice water, the extracted three times with 30mL of dichloromethane, the organic phases were combined, dried and concentrated using eluent (Stonepetroleum ether: 1: ethyl acetate = 40) column chromatography to give Intermediate 5 -Methyl-2-isopropyl-4-bromophenol, yield 82%, pale yellowoil.
