3.1 Step 1: Preparation of 2-methoxy-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde
Suspended powdered potassium hydroxide (0.482g)(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (CAS 60611-24-7, 1.5g) in methanoland 2-fluoro-6-(lOmL) and heated to 60°C for 2.5 hours. The mixture was cooled, diluted with water and extracted with ether (x2).The combined organics were washed with water and concentrated to give 2-methoxy-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (1.051g) as a colourless oil which crystallised on standing.1H NMR (400 MHz, ODd3) 6 ppm 10.52 (d, 1H) 7.60 (t, 1H) 7.37 (d, 1H) 7.22 (d, 1H) 3.95(s, 3H)
