Step 1: 2-Bromobiphenyl (0.55 mL, 3.2 mmol) was dissolved in THF (10 mL) and Et₂O (10 mL) and cooled at -78° C. while n-BuLi (1.3 mL of 2.5 M solution in hexanes, 3.2 mmol) was added rapidly dropwise. After 40 min, the mixture was added via cannula to a -78° C. solution of SO₂ (10 mL) in Et₂O (20 mL). The mixture was warmed to room temperature overnight, concentrated, and triturated with Et₂O. The resulting white solid was suspended in hexane (40 mL) and cooled at 0° C. Sulfuryl chloride (3.4 mL of 1.0 M soln. in CH₂Cl₂, 3.4 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 h. It was then concentrated to afford 2-biphenylsulfonyl chloride in 67% yield.
