[00486] A mixture of 2-chloronicotinonitrile (1) (15 g, 108.3 mmol, 1 equiv) and thiourea (9.88 g, 130 mmol, 1.2 equiv) was refluxed in 150 mL of EtOH for 3.5h. Reaction mixture was cooled to rt and mixed with IN NaOH (150 mL), water (200 mL) and brine (50 mL). Aqueous layer was washed with EA (2x60 mL) and acidified with 6N HC1 to pH 3-4. The precipitate formed was filtered, thoroughly washed with water and dried to afford the target product (2) as a yellow solid (12.1 g, 82%).
