3 Step 3: 3-(2-Bromo-4-chlorophenyl)propanoic acid
To a solution of methyl 3-(2-bromo-4-ch lorophenyl )propanoate (5 g ) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml_) and methanol (20 ml_) is added 4 M aqueous NaOH solution (35 ml_) and the mixture is heated to 50°C for 3 hours. The organic solvents are evaporated in vacuo the residue is diluted with water and washed three times with ethyl acetate. The aqueous phase is neutralized by addition of 4 M hydrochloric acid (10 ml_) and extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are washed with brine and dried (Na2SO4). Evaporation of the solvents gives the title compound. Yield: 4.7 g; LC (method 1 ): tR = 1 .21 min.
