(i) 3,4-Diaminobenzamide (11)
A solution of 3,4-diaminobenzonitrile (1.0 g, 7.51 mmol) in concentrated sulfuric acid (20 ml_) was stirred at room temperature overnight. Water (100 ml_) was added and the resulting mixture was adjusted to pH 10 with 4 M aqueous NaOH and extracted with EtOAc (100 ml_ c 3). The combined organic extracts were concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound 11 (800 mg, 70%) as a light yellow solid. LCMS-A (ES-API): rt 0.31 min, m/z 152.0 [M+H]+.
