Steps:
2 Step 2: 3-bromo-5-ethoxybenzoic acid
To a solution of ethyl 3-bromo-5-ethoxybenzoate (5 g, 18.3 mmol) in methanol (18.3 ml) was added sodium hydroxide (2 M, 9.15 ml, 18.3 mmol) and the reaction stirred for 3hours. The organics were removed in vacuo and the remaining solution extracted with ethyl acetate. The layers were separated and the aqueous phase adjusted to pH 4 by the addition of 2 M HCI and then extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine then dried and concentrated to give the title compound as a white solid (3.44 g, 97 % yield). MS (mlz) 247.0 (M+2).
