General procedure for the synthesis of arylaldehydes 3a-d
General procedure: (2-Bromoethyl)benzene (2.4 g, 13 mmol) was added to a solution of the appropriate hydroxybenzaldehyde (6.5 mmol) and potassium carbonate (3.6 g, 26 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (30 ml) and the mixture was stirred at 40-50°C for 2-4 h. Then water (20 ml) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with H2O (3×100ml), dried with anhydrous Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The crude mixture was cromatographed on a silica gel column (eluant petroleum ether:diethyl ether = 9.5:0.5 or cyclohexane:diethyl ether = 8:2) to provide pure aldehydes 3a-d.
