10.B; 30.B Step B: Preparation of 5,6-diaminonicotinonitrile:
A suspension of 4-amino-3-nitro- benzonitrile (12.0 g, 73.6 mmol) and 10% Pt/C (1.2 g) in ethanol (30 mL) was charged with 1 atmosphere of hydrogen. The mixture was stirred under hydrogen for 18 hours at ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and the filtrate was concentrated to give 3,4-diaminobenzonitrile (6.9 g, 70%).
