Steps:

Ethylene bis(hydrogen succinate)12 67

To a solution of succinic anhydride (2.0 g, 20 mmol) in pyridine (1.6 mL, 20 mmol) was added dropwise ethylene glycol (0.5 mL, 10 mmol) and the mixture refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was removed in vacuo to afford ethylene bis(hydrogen succinate) (67) as a colourless solid (2.50 g, 9.53 mmol, 95%), which was used without further purification; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) d 2.65-2.69 (8H, m, 2x HOOC(CH2)2), 4.32 (4H, s, COO(CH2)2); 13C NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) d 28.9 (CH2, HOOC(CH2)2), 62.4 (CH2, COO(CH2)2), 171.9 (C, C=O), 177.9 (C, COOH).
