General procedure: The aldehyde intermediate was synthesized using Cs₂CO₃ as base and DMF as solvent. Vanillin (500 mg, 3.289 mmol, 1 eq) and the corresponding halogenide (3.947 mmol, 1.2 eq) were dissolved in 15 ml DMF. The resulting suspension was heated under reflux for 2h at 70°C. The suspension was diluted with water and then extracted three times with ethyl acetate. Solvent was evaporated and the residue was recrystallized in methanol/water.
