Reaction Conditions:

with [RuCl(CO)(PPh3)2(2-((2,6-dimethylphenylimino)methyl)quinolin-8-ol)] in neat (no solvent) at 90; for 5 h;

Steps:

2.5. Condensation of nitriles with ethanolamine

General procedure: Nitrile (1 mM), ethanolamine (3 mM) and ruthenium(II) complex (4 M%) were mixed and stirred for 5 h at 90 °C. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate (10 mL) and filtered. The solid material (catalyst) was washed with ethyl acetate, dried and then reused in the next run. The filtrate was concentrated and the resulting residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (50:50) as eluent, to afford the desired product. The products were characterized by 1H NMR [36].
