Approach 2
General procedure: The reactions were conducted in the fume hood at 25 °C, with the molar ratio of PhX:SOCl₂:AlCl₃being 2:1:1 and usage of SOCl₂approximately 10 mmol. For each reaction, SOCl₂ was added dropwise to the PhX-AlCl₃mixture (X=CH3 or Cl) with constantstirring. The reaction took place quickly, indicated by bubbling asabove. After all the SOCl₂ was added, the reaction went to completion, indicated by cessation of bubbling. Then aqueous work-up wasperformed as above. The final product was characterised by GC-MS, and the results are shown in Table 1.
