General procedure: The reactions were conducted in the fume hood at 25 °C, with the molar ratio of PhX:SOCl2:AlCl3 being 2:1:1 and usage of SOCl2 approximately 10 mmol. For each reaction, SOCl2 was added dropwise to the PhX-AlCl3 mixture (X=CH3 or Cl) with constantstirring. The reaction took place quickly, indicated by bubbling asabove. After all the SOCl2 was added, the reaction went to completion, indicated by cessation of bubbling. Then aqueous work-up wasperformed as above. The final product was characterised by GC-MS, and the results are shown in Table 1.
