Diphenylmalonate (7.75 g, 30.3 mmol) was added to a solution of 3-(N, N-diethylamino)phenol (5.0 g, 30.3 mmol, 1 equiv) in dry toluene (60 mL) The reaction mixture was refluxed for 12 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the resulting solid compound was washed with hexane and then reduced to obtain C (6.4 g, 91%).
