1.21 Preparation of 3-methoxy-4-(methylsulfonyl)aniline
A mixture of 2-methoxy-1-(methylsulfonyl)-4-nitrobenzene (368 mg, 1.59 mmol) and SnC12 (1 g) in ethanol (10 mL) was purged with argon and heated to reflux for one hour. TLC showed that the starting material was consumed completely and a new spot had formed. The reaction mixture was quenched with aqueous NaHCO3 and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 3-methoxy-4-(methylsulfonyl)aniline as a yellow solid (300 mg, 94%).
