[00129] Synthesis of 4-methyl-2-phenyl-5-thiazolemethanol (2a) [00130] To a stirred solution of ethyl ester la (0.303 g, 1.237 mmol) in anhydrous THF (1 mL) at 0 °C was added 2M lithium aluminum hydride solution in THF (1.24 ml, 2.48 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred under argon at 0 °C for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched by the careful addition of 0.5 ml of water, followed by 2.5 ml of ethyl acetate and 0.92 g of anhydrous sodium sulfate. The mixture was stirred for 15 minutes and was filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 2a as a light-yellow solid (0.215 g, 1.053 mmol, 85.1%). TLC Rf (25% EtOAc/Hexane) = 0.11. Mp 101-102 °C. FontWeight="Bold" FontSize="10" H NMR (CDC13, 600 MHz): δ ppm 7.88 (2H, d, J = 7.92 Hz), 7.41 (3H, m), 4.79 (2H, s), 2.94 (1H, s), 2.41 (3H, s).
