Step B: 5,7-Dihydroxychroman-4-one.
5,7-Dihydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (1.0 g, 5.6 mmol), EtOH (20 mL), and wet Pd/C (240 mg, 10 wt.%) were stirred under at atmosphere of H2 (50 psi) at 60 °C for 2 hours before cooling to room temperature. The suspension was filtered through a pad of diatomaceous earth and the pad washed with EtOH (20 mL). The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to give the product, which was purified by FCC (eluent: petroleum ether: ethyl acetate, 1:0 to 1:1, gradient elution) to afford the title compound (505 mg, 50%) as a yellow solid. MS (ESI): mass calcd. for C9H8O4180.04 m/z found 180.7 [M+H]+.1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 12.18 (s, 1H), 10.77 (br s, 1H), 5.85 (s, 2H), 4.43 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H), 2.76 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H).
