A mixture of Compound 2 (1 18 g, 0.5 mol), sodium acetate (46 g, 0.5 mol) in 150 mL of acetic anhydride was heated for 30 mins. The mixture was cooled and diluted with cold water. The resulting precipitate was filtered and collected to provide 3- (4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-2-yl)propanoic acid (101 g, yield 91%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO- d6) δ 7.90 (br s, 1H), 7.73-7.71 (m, 1H), 7.62-7.58 (m, 1H), 7.54-7.50 (m, 1H), 7.30-7.26 (m, 2H), 2.83-2.65 (m, 4H). LC-MS: 219 (M+l).
