General procedure: To a stirred solution of the suitable γ-keto acid 1a-k (1.00 mmol) in EtOH (2 mL), hydrazine hydrate (1.00 mmol) was added dropwise. The mixture was heated at 60 °C for 1-3h. After cooling, the precipitate was collected by suction and purified by recrystallization from either toluene or ethanol.
