c) 6-Methoxy-5-nitronicotinic acid 2M Aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (7.70 mL, 15.4 mmol) was added to a stirred suspension of methyl 6-methoxy-5-nitronicotinate (Preparation 9b, 2.66 g, 12.5 mmol) in methanol (60 mL). After 2 hours the mixture was concentrated in vacuo, diluted with water (35 mL) and then the pH was adjusted to 1 with concentrated hydrochloric acid solution. The precipitate was filtered, washed with ice-cold water and dried to give the title compound (2.13 g, 86%) as a white solid. LRMS (m/z): 197 (M-1)+. 1H NMR δ (300 MHz, DMSO-d6): 4.11 (s, 3H), 8.72 (d, 1H), 8.97 (d, 1H).
