A solution of 4-methyl-3-nitroaniline (10.0 g, 0.066 mol) was dissolved in THF (25 ml) at 65 0C. Di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (17.2 g, 0.079 mol, 1.2 equiv) in THF (20 ml) was added dropwise over 30 min. The mixture was then refluxed under nitrogen for 12 h. The reaction was cooled to 25 0C and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give a brown oil. The oil was dissolved in hexane-EtOAc (4:1) and 30 g of silica gel was added to the solution. The solution was stirred for 5 min and the silica was removed by filtration. The silica was then repeatedly washed with hexane-EtOAc (4: 1) until no further product was detected. The solvents were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting yellow solid was washed with hexane and air dried to give 14.2 g of the desired product (85%). ΝMR (300 MHz): 8.07 (s, IH), 7.53 (d, IH), 7.26 - 7.30 (m, IH), 6.66 (s, IH), 2.55 (s, 3H), 1.55 (s, 9H).
