Steps:
9.1 INTERMEDIATE 9; Methyl 8-benzyl-2-methyl-1-oxa-8-azaspiro [4.5] decane-2-carboxylate; Step 1
A solution of tert-butyl 2-OXO-1-OXA-8-AZASPIRO [4.5] decane-8-carboxylate (2.3g, 9.0 mmol) in 15 mL of 4 N HC1 in dioxane was stirred at rtfor Ih. Volatiles were removed and the residue was dissolved in 20 ML OF CH2C12. To the solution was added benzaldehyde (1.09 ML, 10.7 mmol), Et3N (5 ML, 35.9 mmol) and NaB (OAc) 3H (2.86 g, 13.5 mmol). After 14h, the mixture was poured into ether and the resulting solution was washed with NAHC03 and brine, dried with NA2S04 and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (acetone: hexanes = 1: 3) to give 8-benzyl-1-oxa-8-azaspiro [4.5] decan-2-one.
