A mixture of the mono-ester 28 (5.0 g, 16.6 mmol) and K2CO3(6.9 g, 49.9 mmol) in MeOH (80 mL) and water (20 mL) was stirredunder reflux for 10 h. After being cooled to room temperature, thereaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The resulting aqueoussolution was acidified with 1 M HCl aq. to pH = 2 and extractedtwice with EtOAc. The combined organic layer was dried overMgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo to afford object product aswhite powder (4.6 g, 97%). mp 255-256 C. NMR (300 MHz,DMSO-d6) d ppm 1.32-1.48 (1H, m), 1.40 (8H, s), 2.23 (1H, d, J =13.3 Hz), 2.36 (2H, dd, J = 11.9, 3.6 Hz), 2.62 (3H, bs), 4.11 (2H,bs), 12.49 (2H, bs). Anal. Calcd for C12H19NO6: C, 52.74; H, 7.01;N, 5.13. Found: C, 52.94; H, 7.04; N, 5.01.
