Benzyl 2-hydroxyacetate (1246 mg), sodium sulfate (213 mg), and acetonitrile (16 mL) were placed in a 100 ml two-necked flask fitted with a magnetic stirrer, a dropping funnel and arefluxing condenser. 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetic acid (3.10 mL) was then added with stirring at 45°C. After addition, the mixture was further stirred for 2 hours at this temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into 10% aqueous sodium carbonate solution (50 mL) and was extracted with EtOAc (2x50 mL). The combined extracts were washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was purified by columnchromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether/EtOAc = 4:1) to afford the title compound (301 mg) as colorless oil. ‘H NMR (500 MHz, CDC13): 7.41-7.33 (m, 5H), 6.36 (t, J= 73.2 Hz, 1H), 5.23 (s, 2H), 4.46 (s, 2H). ‘9F NMR (376 MHz, CDC13): -86.0, -86.2.
