PREPARATION 41 2-Cyclopentylideneacetonitrile Diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate (0.94 mL, 6.0 mmol) dissolved in 2 mL of diethyl ether is dropwise added to a cooled suspension of 60% sodium hydride (0.24 g, 6.0 mmol), followed by the dropwise addition of cyclopentanone (0.53 mL, 5.99 mmol) in 2 mL of ethyl ether. The mixture is stirred 10 minutes in the ice bath and then overnight at room temperature. Water is cauteously added and it is stirred for half an hour. After extraction with diethyl ether, the organic phase is washed with brine, dried over sodium sulphate and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure. 0.74 g (99%) of the final product were obtained, pure enough to be used in the next synthetic step without further purification. 1H NMR (200 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 1.6-2.0 (m, 4H) 2.4-2.8 (m, 4H) 5.2 (s, 1 H).
