While tributyl borate in the reactor transferred into an ice-bathe is being stirred with amechanical mixer, 300 g H2SO4 is added dropwise. After the mixture is stirred in ice-bathe for 1-3 hours, and at roomtemperature for 2-3 hours, it is stirred at 60-90 °C for 24 hours. In order to eliminate the acid residues, the liquid mixtureis mixed with 50g commercial poly(4-vinyl pyridine) and filtered through a silica column (10cm). The light brown liquidproduct, dibutyl sulfate, is stored in a tightly sealed glass bottle.
