4.2. General procedure for the synthesis of compounds (2a-o)

General procedure: The aldehyde (10 mmol) was added gradually to a solution of NaOH (0.5 g) in H₂O (10.0 mL) and ketone (10 mmol) in ethanol (15 mL) at 0 °C. The mixture was then allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for overnight. At the end of this period, KHSO₄ (1 N) solution was added to the flask until pH~6, followed by extraction with ether. The combined organic layers were dried over Na₂SO₄ and concentrated to give a solid, which was purified by flash column chromatography using EtOAc/petroleum ether at last.
