ethyl 5-formyl-3-methyl-1,2-oxazole-4-carboxylate
To a solution of ethyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)-3-methyl-1,2-oxazole-4-carboxylate (30 g, 162 mmol, Step 2) in anhydrous toluene (500 mL) was added manganese(IV) oxide (42.3 g, 486 mmol).
The mixture was heated to reflux for 6 hours.
The solids were removed by filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a residue that was purified by chromatography on silica gel and eluted with EtOAc PE to give the titled compound (13 g, yield 43%).
1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 10.35 (s, 1H), 4.38-4.51 (m, 2H), 2.55 (s, 3H), 1.39-1.44 (m, 3H).
