Methyl 4-(methanesulfonyl)phenyl acetate: A solution of 4-(methanesulfonyl)phenyl acetic acid (21.8 g, 101 mmol), methanol (250 mL), and concentrated sulfuric acid (1 mL) was heated under reflux for 16 h. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to 25° C. and evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue was taken up in 10% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (200 mL) and ethyl acetate (200 mL). The isolated water phase was extracted with further ethyl acetate (2×200 mL), and the combined organic phases were washed with water (100 mL), dried with anhydrous sodium sulphate, and evaporated to dryness in vacuo to give methyl 4-(methanesulfonyl)phenyl acetate. Yield: 24.0 g (100%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, δ ppm): 7.91 (d, 2H); 7.50 (d, 2H); 3.74 (s, 2H); 3.73 (s, 3H); 3.05 (s, 3H).
