The general procedure for the synthesis of methyl 1-piperazine carboxylate hydrochloride from 4-methylpiperazine-1,4-dicarboxylic acid-1-tert-butyl ester was as follows: 1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2,4-piperazine carboxylate (0.18 g, 0.61 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (6 mL), and an ethyl acetate solution of HCl (4 M, 3 mL) was slowly added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure to afford the white solid product 1,3-piperazinedicarboxylic acid hydrochloride (146 mg) in 99% yield.
