Step 1. To a solution of 2-chloro-5-nitropyridine (44; 20 g, 127 mmol) and potassium carbonate (35 g, 253 mmol) in THF (250 mL) was added tert-butyl 2-cyanoacetate (45; 26.7 g, 190 mmol). The reaction was stirred at 70 °C overnight. Then the mixture solution was concentrated and extracted with EA. The combined organic layers were washed with saturated NaCl, dried over a2S04, and filtered. The solvent was removed in vacuum and purified by a silica gel column (eluting with 5 % - 20% EA/PE) to provide 46 (15 g, yield 45.5 %). XH NMR (300 MHz, CDC13) δ: 8.7-8.6 (d, 1H), 8.1 (d, 1H), 7.3-7.2 (s, 1H), 1.7-1.5 (s, 9H).
