Benzocaine hydrochloride is a topical anesthetic that works by blocking impulse propagation along nerve fibers and at nerve endings. P-nitrotoluene in sulfuric acid is oxidized with sodium dichromate to generate p-nitrobenzoic acid, which is esterified with ethanol.  The reaction is completed to give ethyl p-nitrobenzoate. Benzocaine is synthesized by iron powder was added ethyl p-nitrobenzoate in acetic acid with reducing reaction at 85~95℃.
