First, 200 mg of hydrazine sulfate was dissolved in 3 mL of 0.5 mol/L acetic acid aqueous solution. Potassium cyanate solution (275 mg of potassium cyanate dissolved in 0.93 mL of water) was slowly added dropwise to this solution. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. After the reaction was complete, the mixture was transferred to a 25 mL centrifuge tube. 2 mL of water was added to the centrifuge tube, and crystals formed. The precipitate was separated by centrifugation (5000 g, 5 min). The precipitate was washed twice, successively with 2 mL of anhydrous ethanol and ether, to obtain 150 mg of product. BIUREA(110-21-4) is chemically classified as an amide. Amides/imides react with azo and diazo compounds to generate toxic gases. Flammable gases are formed by the reaction of organic amides/imides with strong reducing agents. Amides are very weak bases (weaker than water). Imides are less basic yet and in fact react with strong bases to form salts. That is, they can react as acids. Mixing amides with dehydrating agents such as P2O5 or SOCl2 generates the corresponding nitrile. The combustion of these compounds generates mixed oxides of nitrogen (NOx). | [Air & Water Reactions]
