Brown powder. It is highly water-soluble, soluble in ethylene glycol ether, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in other organic solvents. Its aqueous solution is magenta. Addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid produces a yellowish-olive-brown precipitate, while addition of concentrated alkali produces a purple precipitate. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it is dark blue, producing a light orange-brown precipitate upon dilution. In concentrated nitric acid, it is bright blue, transitioning to a reddish-brown color.
