2-(4-Propylphenyl)acetonitrile (41.0 mg, 0.257 mmol) was used as starting material, which was dissolved in 1 mL of 30% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and the reaction was stirred under reflux conditions for 4 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was acidified with 3 mL of 10% hydrochloric acid aqueous solution, followed by extraction with ether (3 mL × 3). The organic phases were combined and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate to remove water. The desiccant was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and purified by column chromatography to afford 34.8 mg (0.195 mmol, 76% yield) of the target product 2-(4-propylphenyl)acetic acid.
