36.6 g (45.0 mmol) of heptane glycol distearate, 150 mL of CH₂Cl₂, and 0.677 g of 10% palladium/carbon were loaded into a high-pressure Monel alloy bomb with a glass insert. Hydrogenolysis was carried out at room temperature under 50 atm of H₂ for 48 hours. The reaction was filtered off and the catalyst (which could be reused) was washed with CH₂Cl₂. The filtrate was concentrated to give a mixture of (triphenylmethane) and oil. The mixture was dissolved in boiling methanol, and most of the triphenylmethane was crystallized by cooling the solution to 0°C. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was washed six times with hexane to remove trace amounts of triphenylmethane, giving hexaethylene glycol.
