It is precipitated by hydrolysis when concentrated solutions of antimony trichloride in water or hydrochloric acid are diluted. Because other chloride oxides, e.g., Sb4O5Cl2, also form, reaction conditions must be controlled carefully. Antimony chloride oxide is an intermediate in the production of antimony salts and is used in smoke-producing agents.
