Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a derivative of cellulose, the most abundant organic polymer found in the cell walls of plants. It is produced by chemically reacting cellulose (usually from wood pulp or cotton lint) with chloroacetic acid in an alkaline medium. The result is a water-soluble anionic polymer with the chemical formula [C₆H₇O₂(OH)₂OCH₂COONa]ₙ.
