More Info: Spironolactone is a mild potassium-sparing diuretic. Its chemical structure is similar to aldosterone. It competes with aldosterone for aldosterone receptors in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct cells, affecting the binding of aldosterone to its receptor. This interference hinders the synthesis of aldosterone-induced proteins, thus inhibiting K+-Na+ exchange, reducing the excretion of potassium, and producing a potassium-sparing diuretic effect.
