What is Acetamiprid?

Acetamiprid is an odorless, neonicotinoid insecticide composed from a synthetic organic compound.  It is an insecticide that is used to control sucking and chewing pests. It is highly soluble in water and is volatile. Based on its chemical properties it would not be expected to leach to groundwater. It is not persistence in soil systems but may be very persistent in aquatic systems under certain conditions. It has a moderate mammalian toxicity and it has a high potential for bioaccumulation. Acetamiprid is a recognised irritant. It is highly toxic to birds and earthworms and moderately toxic to most aquatic organisms.

Where is Acetamiprid used?

Acetamiprid is used on a large variety of crops and trees, including leafy vegetables, citrus fruit, grapes, cotton, canola, cereals, cucumbers, melons, onions, peaches, rice, stone fruit, strawberries, sugar beets, tea, tobacco, pears, apples, peppers, plums, potatoes, tomatoes, house plants, and ornamental plants. Acetamiprid is a key pesticide in commercial cherry farming, since it is effective against larvae of cherry fruit flies. Acetamiprid can be applied to foliage, seed, and soil. Acetamiprid has also gained acceptance in bed bug control programs.

How does Acetamiprid work?

Acetamiprid is a mobile, rapidly biodegradable compound in most soil. The primary degradation pathway is aerobic soil metabolism. Acetamiprid is relatively stable to hydrolysis at environmental temperatures, and photodegrades relatively slowly in water, whereas it is rapidly degraded in soils to form N-(6-chloro-pyrid-3-yl-methyl)-N-methyl-amine and 6-CNA. The DT50 values of acetamiprid in clay loam or light clay soils were in range of 1–2 days. In soil from the field or that used in container studies, acetamiprid degraded very rapidly (half-life 12 days). The main pathway was nitrile oxidation of acetamiprid into the N-amidino derivative, which cleaved, affording the N-(6-chloro-pyrid-3-ylmethyl)-N-methyl-amine and finally to 6-CNA. Mineralization to carbon dioxide followed.
