To a solution of the above compound (0.136 g, 0.849 mmol) in 4 mL of methanol cooled to 0 °C was added sodium borohydride (9.6 mg, 0.26 mmol). After 30 min, the reaction was treated with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride, diluted with water, and extracted 2x withdichloromethane. The combined organic fractions were washed 3x with water, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified via silica gel chromatography, eluting with 0-40% ethyl acetate in hexanes to provide (1 -methyl- lH-indol-4- yl)methanol that gave a proton NMR spectra consistent with theory and a mass ion (ES+) of 163.3 for [M+H]+.
