Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:10-bromo-7H-benzo[c]carbazole with sodium hydride in N,N-dimethyl-formamide for 1 h;
Stage #2:iodobenzene in N,N-dimethyl-formamide

Steps:

18 Synthesis of [Compound 1]
General procedure: 60% sodium hydride (2.1 g, 52 mmol) and 50 mL of dimethylformamide were added and stirred for about 30 minutes. [Intermediate 1-d] (15 g, 44 mmol) obtained in [Reaction Scheme 1-4] and 100 mL of dimethylformamide were added dropwise, followed by stirring for about 1 hour. [Intermediate 1-c] (15.3 g, 52.4 mmol) obtained in [Scheme 1-3] and 100 mL of dimethylformamide were added and stirred overnight. A solid formed by adding 600 mL of distilled water was filtered. Recrystallized from toluene to give [Compound 1] 20.9 g (80% yield).
